Child bearing hips

Day 70: One thing I learned today…

This goes as no surprise. Women and men are different but we are all human beings.

I listened to a podcast through Muscle Maven Radio which I learned some interesting & different considerations within training for women.

Women also have a different genetic and hormonal make up as well.

Looking at structure, women tend to have wider hips for reproduction as well as a smaller rib cage due to needing more room in the abdominal cavity. For years, I’ve heard references about childbearing hips but I did not consider the rib cage being smaller. With both of these factors Kayla Mulvogue, physiotherapist, discussed some considerations in training.

Having wider hips means we have an increased angle, that the thigh bones come out from our hips and goes in towards our knees which is a consideration in training in terms of knee pain. Women are more susceptible to knee pain and injury. Women tend to have more instability within the knee. Also, due to the wider hip structure women need to have an increased carrying angle in order for our arms not to hit our hips when walking.

I am probably not doing justice of explaining this so I encourage you to listen to the podcast :)
