Did you obsess over grades in school?

Day 216: one thing I learned today…

When you were younger, did you ever find yourself asking these questions (or maybe now if

you are in courses). Do we need to know (fill in the blank)? Will this be on the test? Is there a study guide?

For approximately 7 centuries, schools did not rely on a grading system. Were things better off without it?

Are chasing these good grades and standards making us happy? There is an idea that students now days pride themselves in good grades. This holds value or a sense of purpose. The same can go for tracking fitness levels, sleep devices, competitive apps, and social media “likes”.

Do you fall into this? Do you like to strive for higher standards? Do you feel like you may be a bit obsessive?

There is a thought that grades are actually hurting students. They are undermining learning and lead student to choose less challenging tasks. Grades are extrinsic, some students are rewarded by the grade rather than learning.Does this have anything to do with the statistics of college students below?

  • 40% of college student reported too depressed to function

  • 1/2 have expressed feeling hopeless a lot of the time

  • 60% experienced overwhelming anxiety

  • 1 in 10 have considered suicide in the last year

I am guilty of using devices to track my progress. I honestly cannot go for a run without my Garmin watch. I am trying to be better about being in the moment and just going for a run because it feels good.

I am also guilty of recently taking a test just to “pass” and did not really learn all the material needed. I asked that same questions. Will this be on the test?

What do you think?
