Day 165: One thing I learned today…

is a way to rid the things which have been undermining your motivation (to exercise).

Michelle Segar, PhD. and author of No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness, discusses a strategy for letting go of your limiting beliefs around exercise.

Simply put, take out a pencil and paper and jot down all of your thoughts and feelings around exercise. This may include your beliefs around what it means to exercise, your hopes or expectations around exercise, and what you hope to gain.

Now look at the list and ask yourself if these items keep you motivated to exercise, are they pleasurable?

These items probably do not (especially if you wrote down something like “I have to push myself to the extreme” or “I have to sweat to make it count”)

Continue to add to your list, write down all of your expectations and beliefs which are no longer supporting you.

The rip up the list! You can even redefine what exercise means to you. Re-write your story. What do you love about exercise?

I believe this exercise can be used for any scenario you have in your life. Is there another area holding you back?
