Increase in unltra-proccessed foods.

Day 242: One thing I learned today…



Trends in consumption of ultraproccessed Foods has increased in youth. A study looked at youth aged 2-19 years old from 1999-2018.


An overall increase from 61.4% to 67% of ultraproccessed foods was recorded. In addition, a decrease in consumption was reported for unprocessed or minimally processed foods. Decreasing from 28.8% to 23.5%. These trends can lead to weight gain and other issues (such as chronic disease).


The article broke down the ultraproccessed foods into categories and noted the trends in each subgroup.

  • Ready to heat and eat: Increased from 2.2% to 11.2%

  • Sweet snacks and sweets: increased from 10.7% to 12.9%

  • Sugar sweetened beverages: decreased from 10.8% to 5.3%

  • Processed fats, oils condiments, sauces: decreased 7.1% to 4.0%
