Day 175: One thing I learned today…

I am reading a new book and I highly recommend it to EVERYBODY. This book has been

recommended to me by multiple people in different groups I am a part of from yoga to health groups. It is called Breath: The Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor.

Did you know the way you breath, through the nose or through the mouth is related to so many things. Breathing through your mouth effects congestion, snoring, asthma, allergies, bad breath, tooth decay, gum inflammation, and so many others. Breathing through the nose can aid immunity, reduce coughing, increase airflow to vein and arteries, reduce expose to foreign substance.

In the book a study was conducted on cyclists. Round one the athletes were told to breath completely through their mouth and build up to 200 watts and then compared this to the second round which consisted of breathing through the nose. For one participant, mouth breathing was at a rate of 47 breaths per minute and nasal was at a rate of 14 breaths per minute.

I’ve just started the book so I am sure I will have more to share over time.
