Time or Money?

Day 35: One thing I learned today…

Today I listened to Ashley Whillans discuss some of the research she has conducted. She is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Business School and Author of the book Time Smart. Ashley was apart of research which surveyed 50,000 people and asked if they valued money or time or time over money. This survey reported about a 50/50 split.

She continued to discuss ways in which we can conduct a Time Audit to be sure we are using our time in a meaningful way. This can be as simple as looking at your activities over a day and see how you are currently spending your time. It was suggested to pick a typical Tuesday. Review how much time you spend in activities which are satisfying and meaningful. Think about how you can maximize your time doing these types of activities. In return, minimize time spent in unpleasant or stressful activities. There is a lot to weigh out here though. Some activities may be higher in meaning but low on pleasure or vice versa (taking care of a sick child in comparison to a massage) She recommends diversifying your time and mixing it up with meaning and pleasure.

Sometimes we sacrifice time for money in the short term to gain time long term. But then other times, we may research for hours and hours for the best deal on a new gadget just to save a little bit of money. Is the payoff worth it? Maybe it is for you. You may decided to have a long commute for the trade off of having a larger house. The purpose of a time audit is to make sure you are making the most of your time. Whether you value money or time, this can still be beneficial to you. She introduced a few phrases: Funding time which is when one can source out time with the use of money (hiring someone to clean the house) or Finding time which is when you look at your tasks and delegate.

Are there other trade-offs you could make?
