To return the shoes or not?

Day 272: One thing I learned today…

This is kind of a follow up to yesterday’s topic about recycling clothes.

Have you ever taken a pair of shoes back to the store? As a runner, it is important to have a shoe I really, really like. I’ve taken two pairs of shoes back to a running store (after running in them for a couple of weeks). Somehow I put a hole in the top of both shoes on one pair. This should have been a hint of incorrect running form. And the others were just not doing it for me.

Each time the stores took them back. But what happens to them then? Does the local running store take the hit? I learned that they do not. For a while, the companies would ask for the shoes back to run an analysis. However not knowing who was wearing them and the details of the return may this hard. Some store may try to mark the shoes down and resell. Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, on The Trail Runner Nation podcast, donates the returned shoes to an opioid recovery program. How cool is that? He says he had donated about 300 pairs.
