Day 194: One thing I learned today…
“Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress.” James Clear, Atomic Habits
What is your system?
Finding ways to be part of communities continue to help support my mental health, especially when working from home. Today, I participated in a company book club ( how awesome is that!?!)
We are reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.
We discussed focusing on the identity and the system of a goal. To break this down a bit, focusing on the identify refers to focusing on WHO you want to be. Focusing on the system is the HOW behind getting there.
One example used in the book is smoking. If you have a goal to stop smoking, then you should start to think of yourself as a non-smoker (as your identity). Visual who you want to be and identify yourself as that person.
Now what are the steps to how you will get there? This is your system.
There are multiple ways to plan how you will get there. Here are a few things you can look into. Or reach out for assistance.
· WOOP- Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan
· First- Then Planning
· Decision Step Tool
· Start Big, Get Small
· One thing to START, STOP and CHANGE
